Internet TV Set Top Box Showdown

Connecting a device to your TV to watch shows from the internet is quickly becoming a big thing. With services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video all delivering great movie and television choices companies have begun creating set top boxes to get people connected. The major players in this showdown are Boxee, Roku, and The Revue from Google. These boxes are currently the market leaders and all offer their unique pros and cons. Some have better interfaces than others, and some have better support than the others.

The Boxee Box has the most interesting history. Originally part of XBMC, a xbox media center software, it branched off and became a stand alone application. From there it quickly become apparent that a set top box was about to be created. Boxee excels at social integration and interface design. It’s roots from the XBMC show as it is the most pretty of three major players. It doesn’t have quite as much integration with the Internet as the other two choices, but it is a solid option.

Roku is currently on it’s 3rd generation of devices designed to connect the TV to the internet. They are the most casual friendly affair. If you have a grandma that is looking for this functionality , the Roku is the way to go. Setting up Netflix and Hulu is painless and just works right out of the box. However, you are giving up some of your freedom with a more locked down platform.

Google’s Revue is the most unique of three. Featuring the deepest feature set and the highest learning curve, this set top box is more akin to a computer than a device in the living room. It ships with a full keyboard. For the tinkerers out there, this box will probably have the most fun to offer you.
